A suit cover: why it earns its place in the closet
Suits and coats are structured garments, with shoulder pads, lining, pressed lapels and a precisely sewn shoulder line. When they hang uncovered, dust settles on the shoulders, the fabric rubs against neighboring garments and the lapels crease. A suit cover, also called a garment bag, encloses the garment on all sides and keeps it hanging in its natural shape on the hanger. It suits a groom's suit or an event suit, a work jacket, a blazer and a winter coat waiting for next season. This category is part of Dress and Suit Covers.
Models in this category
Non-woven cover with full zipper and clear pocket: breathable non-woven fabric in six lengths, from 80 to 180 cm, in white and black, with an outer pocket for a tie, a thin belt or spare buttons.
Non-woven cover with zipper and ID window: the same six sizes, with a clear window and a pocket for a note with the customer's name, size or delivery date.
Breathable cover with carry handles, 60x100 cm: for a jacket or a suit with the trousers folded over the hanger, with a top handle and a bottom handle for carrying it folded.
Semi-transparent PEVA cover with full zipper: water-repellent and easy to wipe, in four lengths from 80 to 140 cm, so you can see which garment hangs inside.
Grey cover with 8 cm gusset and ID window: 60×180 cm with a side gusset, for long coats, wool coats and jackets with shoulder pads.
Which cover length fits a suit or a coat
Measure the garment while it hangs on its hanger, from the top of the hanger to the hem, and add 10 to 15 cm. The hook and shoulders of the hanger take up part of the length, so measuring only from the shoulder leads to a cover that is too short.
60×80 cm: button-down shirt, vest, short jacket.
60×100 cm: suit jacket, blazer, jacket with trousers folded over the hanger bar.
60×120 cm: full suit with room to spare, short coat, leather jacket.
60×140 cm: knee-length coat, short trench coat.
60×160 to 60×180 cm: long coat, long trench coat, ankle-length wool coat.
A suit whose trousers hang full length on a hanger with clips for trousers needs a longer cover than a suit with the trousers folded over a bar. Measure by the same rule and choose the next length up.
Flat cover or gusseted cover
A flat cover suits a regular-cut jacket or suit and saves space on the rail. A thick wool coat, a down coat or a jacket with prominent shoulder pads gets pressed between the two sides of a flat cover, and the shoulder loses its line. For garments like these, choose a cover with an 8 cm side gusset, which can also hold a suit and a shirt on two hangers.
Non-woven or PEVA for a suit
Non-woven breathes, so it is the choice for storage of several months: a winter coat in summer, a groom's suit after the wedding, a jacket worn twice a year. Black is opaque to light and hides signs of use, and white gives a clean look at handover.
PEVA repels water and wipes clean easily, and suits a trip to an event, a rainy day and short-term hanging in a shop. It does not breathe, so close it only over a completely dry garment.
For all the breathable models see Non-Woven Garment Covers, and for traveling with a suit there are also Foldable Covers with Carry Handles.
Storing a suit or coat in a cover properly
Hang it on a wide hanger with rounded shoulders, such as a wooden hanger. A thin wire hanger leaves bumps in the jacket's shoulders.
Button the jacket before hanging it, so the lapels do not fold.
Put only a clean, dry garment in the cover. After dry cleaning, take the garment out of the cleaner's plastic bag and only then close it in the cover.
After steam ironing, let the garment cool and dry before closing the zipper.
Leave a little space between covers on the rail, so air can pass and garments are not pressed together.
For suit shops, tailors and dry cleaners
A suit shop hands over the suit in a cover at the point of sale, a tailor returns a jacket in it after alterations, and a dry cleaner returns a coat in it instead of a single-use bag. Every model is sold by the single unit and in quantity, directly from import. Non-woven covers can be ordered with logo printing from 30 units, and all business options are gathered in Garment Covers for Businesses and Shops. Suit shops will also find male display mannequins for showing suits. For a quote, contact us. Frequently asked questions
What cover size does a men's suit need?
A jacket with trousers folded over the hanger bar fits a 60×100 cm cover, and a suit hung with more room or a short coat fits 60×120 cm. Measure from the top of the hanger to the hem and add 10 to 15 cm. All lengths, from 80 to 180 cm, are available in the non-woven cover with the clear pocket.
Which cover suits a long winter coat?
A knee-length coat fits a 140 cm cover, and an ankle-length coat a 160 to 180 cm cover. For a thick wool coat or a down coat, a cover with an 8 cm gusset is better, such as the grey cover with the ID window, so the coat is not pressed and the shoulders keep their shape. For storage between seasons, choose breathable non-woven.
Can I keep a tie and a belt together with the suit?
Yes. The cover with the clear pocket has an outer pocket for a tie, a thin belt or spare buttons, and you can see what is inside without opening the zipper. In the model with the ID window you can also slip in a note with the customer's name, size or delivery date.
How do I prevent creases in a jacket's shoulders inside a cover?
Hang the jacket on a wide hanger with rounded shoulders, button it and close the zipper slowly, without pressing the fabric. A jacket with prominent shoulder pads keeps better in a cover with a side gusset, and in the closet leave space between covers. Wooden hangers 44.5 cm wide suit most adult jackets.
Black or white cover for a suit?
A black cover is opaque to light, hides dust and signs of use and looks distinguished with dark suits, so it is common in suit shops, for travel and for handing over to customers. A white cover gives a bright, clean look and suits light-colored garments and display. In a shop or dry cleaner you can use both colors to separate ready garments from garments waiting for alterations.
