What is a clear cutting ruler
A cutting ruler is a clear, relatively thick ruler with a grid of lines printed along its entire length and width. It is used for measuring, marking and as a guide for a rotary cutter. You can see the fabric through it, so you can line up a grid line exactly on the edge of the fabric and cut a precise width without marking first.
How to choose a size
15×25 cm: compact, for a small table, classes and a sewing bag.
15×30 cm: the most common size. For squares, details and seam allowances.
10×45 cm: long and narrow. For long strips, bias tape and lines along a pattern.
Marking colour
Black lines show up well on light fabric and on pattern paper. Yellow lines stand out on dark fabric. On multicoloured printed fabric, a ruler with two-colour markings is more convenient, because one of them always stands out.
Angle lines: what they're for
The 45-degree line is used for cutting bias tape and diagonal strips. The 30- and 60-degree lines are used in quilting for cutting triangles, diamonds and hexagons. Place the angle line on the edge of the fabric and cut along the edge of the ruler.
Tips for safe, accurate cutting
Work on a dedicated cutting mat.
Press on the ruler with an open palm, fingers well away from the edge.
Cut in a single stroke, away from your body.
Don't iron near an acrylic ruler and don't clean it with alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
What is a sewing cutting ruler?
A thick, transparent ruler with a grid of lines, used for measuring, marking and as a guide for a rotary cutter.
Which size of cutting ruler should I buy first?
15×30 cm. It suits most jobs: squares, details and seam allowances. For long strips, add a 45 cm ruler.
What is the difference between a cutting ruler and a regular ruler?
A cutting ruler is clear and thick, with a full grid of lines and angle lines, and its edge serves as a guide for the blade. A regular ruler is thin, and the blade can ride up over it.
What are the 30, 45 and 60 degree lines for?
45 degrees for cutting bias tape and diagonal strips. 30 and 60 degrees for cutting triangles and diamonds in quilting.
Which marking color is best?
Black for light fabric and pattern paper, yellow for dark fabric, and both colors for printed fabric.
Can I cut along the ruler with a rotary cutter?
Yes. On a cutting mat, pressing down on the ruler with your other hand.
Can I cut along the ruler with scissors?
Not advisable. Scissors damage the ruler's edge. Mark with the ruler and cut along the marking.
How do I clean an acrylic ruler?
With water and a soft cloth, without alcohol or solvents.
How do I take care of a transparent ruler?
Store it flat or hanging, away from heat, so it does not warp.
Can I order a quantity for a class or school?
Yes. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: call 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
