Men's dress forms

Men's dress forms for tailors, menswear designers and fashion students. The forms are built with masculine proportions: broad shoulders, a flat chest and a full neck. Use them to construct suits, jackets, shirts and pants, and to present finished work in the studio. Each model lists its chest, waist and shoulder measurements, height range and base type, so you can choose a form that matches the size you sew.

A men's dress form: the body the suit is built on

In menswear tailoring, most of the work happens at the shoulders, the collar and the drape of the back. On a men's dress form you can see how the jacket sits, where the lapel rolls, how the sleeve sets into the shoulder and whether the pants hang straight. That lets you correct the pattern before cutting the final fabric. Anyone who sews menswear on a women's form quickly discovers that a garment that looks perfect on the form doesn't fit the client.

Why a women's form isn't suitable for sewing menswear

  • Shoulders: a broader, squarer shoulder line, which changes where the sleeve seam sits and how thick the padding should be

  • Chest: a flat surface with no bust line. Darts and chest seams built on a women's form create unwanted volume

  • Waist and hips: a small difference between waist and hips, and the waist sits lower

  • Neck and back: a thicker neck and longer back, which determine collar height and jacket length

Types of men's dress forms

Fixed-size pinnable form

A rigid body covered with a layer you can pin into, in one defined size. It's the right choice for a tailor who works mainly in one size, for production runs and for fashion schools. It's accurate and stable, and pins go in at any angle.

Adjustable form

Adjustment dials for the chest, waist, hips and sometimes the neck and back length. One form covers several sizes, which makes it a good fit for sewists working with private clients of different sizes. The downside: gaps remain between the sections, and pinning is less convenient than on a fixed-size form.

Tailor-style form for presenting finished work

A fabric-covered form with a wooden neck cap and a pole on a wooden or metal base. It's used to present a finished suit to the client, for photography and for styling the studio. Models such as the men's form in cream fabric with articulated wooden arms let you bend the arms to show off a sleeve and a natural pose. Good to know: you can't pin into a hard plastic body, so each model's specs state whether it's pinnable or not.

Half body or body with legs

A half-body form is enough for shirts, vests and jackets. If you sew pants, you need a form with a shaped crotch area, ideally with a side-mounted pole that leaves the pant legs free to hang straight.

Buying guide: five questions before you buy

1. What size do I sew?

The key measurements are chest, waist, neck and shoulder width. Rule of thumb: a European jacket size is roughly half the chest measurement in centimeters.

  • Size 46 – chest of about 92 cm

  • Size 48 – chest of about 96 cm

  • Size 50 – chest of about 100 cm

  • Size 52 – chest of about 104 cm

  • Size 54 – chest of about 108 cm

If the client falls between two sizes, choose the smaller form and pad it to the exact size. A form that's too big can't be made smaller.

2. Do I need to pin?

For fitting, pattern work and rolling lapels you need a pinnable form. To present a finished garment, a hard form is enough, and it's usually more durable and easier to clean.

3. Shoulders and arms

A fitted jacket is hard to put on rigid shoulders. Collapsible shoulders or removable arms make dressing easier and let you check sleeve length and how the sleeve sets into the shoulder.

4. Base and height

In the studio, it's most comfortable to work when the form's shoulder line is at eye level. An adjustable pole lets you work standing or sitting. A heavy base or a wide tripod stays stable even with a heavy coat, and a base on casters is handy if you move the form between workstations.

5. For which garment?

A half-body form is enough for shirts and jackets. A full suit calls for a form with a defined waist and hips. For presenting to a client or for photography, a form with a refined finish that suits the space is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a size for a men's dress form?

Measure the bust circumference, waist, neck and shoulder width. Rule of thumb: a European jacket size is roughly equal to half the bust circumference in centimeters, so size 48 is a bust circumference of about 96 cm and size 52 is about 104 cm. If the client is between two sizes, choose the smaller form and pad it, because a form that is too large cannot be made smaller.

What is the difference between a men's dress form and a men's display mannequin?

A dress form has a layer you can stick pins into, and it is built to precise measurements for pattern work and fitting. A display mannequin is usually made of rigid plastic or fiberglass, is intended for displaying finished garments and you cannot stick pins into it. The specification of each model states whether it can be pinned.

Can men's clothing be sewn on a women's dress form?

Not recommended. A women's form has a bust line, narrow, sloping shoulders and a high, defined waist. A men's garment built on it will come out with unnecessary volume in the chest and with the sleeve seam in the wrong place. An adjustable form whose range reaches men's sizes can help, but for accurate tailoring a dedicated men's form is better.

Why are folding shoulders or removable arms important in a men's form?

A fitted jacket and coat are hard to put on rigid shoulders, and the fabric may stretch. When you fold the shoulders or take off the arms, you can put the garment on and take it off easily. Arms also let you check the sleeve length and how it sits at the shoulder.

Can I order several men's forms for a studio, a school or a chain of stores?

Yes. HaBayit LaBubot (the House of Dress Forms and Display Mannequins) also sells wholesale to stores, chains, studios and fashion schools. For a quote on a quantity, you can contact us on WhatsApp at 055-2473993 or by email at habayt.labuvot@gmail.com, or via the Contact page. You can also come to Kfar Giladi 15 in Tel Aviv and see the forms up close.

How do you measure a man to choose a dress form?

Measure the chest circumference at the widest point under the armpits, the waist circumference at the height where the trousers sit, the neck circumference and the shoulder width from shoulder tip to shoulder tip. Compare the measurements to the form's chart.

Which garments are suitable to build on a men's dress form?

Button-up shirts, jackets, suits, vests and coats. The form helps check the shoulder line, the collar and how the garment falls on the back.

Can I sew pants on a men's dress form?

Only on a form with legs, or for checking the waistline and hips on a form that continues to the thigh. For upper-body garments, a form that ends at the hip line is enough.

How do you pad a dress form to a client's measurements?

Attach thin layers of batting or fleece in the areas where the client is wider than the form, and put a snug fabric cover over them. A dress form can be enlarged with padding, but it can't be made smaller, so between two sizes choose the smaller one.

How do I take care of a dress form?

Cover it when you are not working on it, remove the pins at the end of the work, and clean light stains with a damp cloth and mild soap without soaking the body.
