Product description

Pressing ham with an opening: press between buttons and along a zipper

The universal pressing ham with an opening is a narrow padded surface, 14 cm wide, raised on a shaped wooden base 33 cm long and with an overall height of 13 cm. At one end of the ham there is a U-shaped opening, and this is what distinguishes it from a regular pressing ham. Place buttons, zipper teeth, hooks or a protruding decoration in the opening, and the fabric around them stays flat on the surface. This way you press right up to a button without pressing on it, and without it being pushed into the fabric and leaving a mark.

The rest of the ham serves as a narrow, rounded surface for pressing sleeves, collars, cuffs and hems, and for stubborn wrinkles in areas that don't fit comfortably on a regular ironing board. Under the end with the opening there is a gap, so you can thread a short sleeve or a narrow trouser leg around the surface.

The cover is made of quality, pleasant fabric in white, and the base is made of wood.

How this model differs from our other pressing hams

  • Universal pressing ham with an opening (the model on this page): a padded surface 14 cm wide with a U-shaped opening, height 13 cm. For button plackets, zippers and narrow areas

  • Universal pressing ham on a tall stand: a 21 cm long cylinder on a 40 cm tall stand, for sleeve caps and shoulders while the garment hangs below

  • Long sleeve pressing ham: a length of about 56 cm, for a whole sleeve in one run

  • Shaped wooden pressing block: solid wood with a pointed end, for collar corners and flaps

Common uses

  • Button plackets in shirts, dresses and baby shirts

  • Along zippers in dresses, skirts and trousers

  • Around hooks, snaps, appliqués and beads

  • Collars and cuffs

  • Stubborn wrinkles in narrow areas of a finished garment

  • Short sleeves and children's clothing

Who the ham is for

  • Seamstresses and designers: for pressing button plackets and zippers while sewing

  • Tailors and garment alterers: for replacing a zipper and for repairs to button plackets, after which only the repaired area needs pressing

  • Evening and wedding dress studios: for pressing around ornaments, beads and covered buttons

  • Clothing stores: for quick pressing of button-down shirts before display

  • Fashion design schools and sewing classes: equipment for every work station; for quantity orders you can contact us

Professional tips for working with a pressing ham with an opening

  • Buttons facing down: place the button placket with the buttons facing into the opening, and press from the inside of the garment

  • Zipper closed: close the zipper, place the teeth inside the opening and press the fabric from both sides

  • Move the garment along the opening: on a long button placket, press a section, move the garment and continue to the next button

  • A pressing cloth for delicate fabrics: with dark fabrics and satin, place a thin pressing cloth between the iron and the garment

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Pressing directly on plastic buttons: plastic buttons and zipper teeth may melt or get shiny. They need to be inside the opening, not under the iron

  • Pressing a button placket on a flat surface from the visible side: the buttons are pushed into the fabric and leave marks around them. Press from the inside over the opening

  • An iron that stays in place: on a narrow, padded surface the heat concentrates and may leave shine. Keep moving the iron

  • Pressing hard on the end with the opening: this is the narrow part of the ham. Press gently and hold the base with the other hand

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the pressing pad with the opening?

The pad is 14 cm wide, the total height is 13 cm and the wooden base is 33 cm long.

Why is there an opening at the end of the pressing pad?

To place buttons, zipper teeth, hooks and embellishments in it while pressing. The fabric around them stays flat on the surface, and you can press right up against them without pressing on them.

How do you press a button placket without marks?

Turn the garment over, place the button placket so the buttons go into the opening, and press from the inside. The buttons aren't pressed by themselves and no marks form around them.

What is the pressing pad made of?

The base is made of wood, and the padded surface is covered with a quality, pleasant fabric in white.

How is it different from the universal pressing pad on the tall stand?

The pad on the tall stand is a cylinder 40 cm high, for sleeve caps and shoulders while the garment hangs. The pad with the opening is low, 13 cm high, and intended mainly for button plackets, zippers and narrow areas.

Which parts of a garment is it convenient to press on the pad?

Button plackets, zipper openings, gathers, short hems, collars and narrow areas that do not fit comfortably on a regular ironing board.

Can I iron on it with steam?

Yes. Press with steam as usual and leave the fabric on the pad until it cools slightly, so the shape sets.

Is the pad stable on the table?

Yes. The padded surface sits on a wooden base, so the pad stands stably on the worktable while pressing.

How do I keep the padding clean?

Press only clean, dry garments, clean the soleplate of the iron of starch or glue residue, and use a pressing cloth when working with fusible interfacing.

Can I order several pads for a studio or a sewing school?

Yes. For bulk orders you can contact us.
