Product description

Curve Ruler for Drawing Curved Lines

A yellow curve ruler, with metric markings up to 61 cm. The curve opens gradually along the ruler, from a sharp arc at the rounded end to a wide arc at the other end.

The yellow colour stands out on the work table and among pattern papers, the black numbers are easy to read, and at the end there is a hole for hanging on a hook or a tool board.

Common uses

  • Drawing the hip line and side seam line of skirts, dresses and trousers.

  • Drawing rounded hems and sleeves.

  • Drawing a curved waist line and back line.

  • Measuring a curved line on a pattern.

  • Fitting corrections and smoothing lines.

Who it is for

Fashion design and pattern-making students, sewists who draft patterns, pattern makers and schools that need a lightweight ruler for students. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional tips

  • Draw first in pencil, and only after checking go over it in pen or chalk.

  • Mark at least three points for each curve in advance, and look for the section of the ruler that passes through all of them.

  • Write on the pattern the number on the ruler at the starting point. That way you can draw the line in exactly the same place on the matching pattern or in a different size.

  • Check that the lines meet at a right angle where seams join, for example at the centre back and the side seam.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing curves freehand. The line doesn't repeat itself on the other side and in other sizes.

  • Using the sharpest part of the ruler for every line. Choose the section whose curve is closest to the curve of the body.

  • Drawing a long line in one go. Draw in sections, and move the ruler along the line as the curve continues.

How this ruler is different

This is the plastic curve ruler, light and in a conspicuous colour, with a hanging hole. The metal curve ruler of the same length is stiffer and heavier. The triangular ruler combines a straight line and several curves, while this curve ruler gives one long arc.

All the pattern curve rulers are in Curve Rulers. For straight lines and seam allowances see Cutting & Quilting Rulers, and for right angles Square Rulers. Before drawing, take measurements with a Measuring Tape.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ruler?

The markings go up to 61 cm.

What is the ruler made of?

Yellow plastic with black markings.

Why does the ruler have a hole?

For hanging on a hook or a tool board, so the ruler does not warp and is always within reach.

What is the difference between it and the metal curve ruler?

The length is similar. The yellow one is plastic and lighter, while the metal ruler is rigid and heavier.

Is the marking metric?

Yes. The ruler says METRIC and is marked in centimeters.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?

A hip curve is long and curves gradually, for side, hip and hem lines. A French curve is shorter and more rounded, for the armhole and neckline.

How do I draw a curved line with a curve ruler?

First mark the points the line needs to pass through, then move and rotate the ruler until a section of its curve passes through two or three of them at once, and draw.

Is the ruler also suitable for fitting alterations?

Yes. Use it to smooth a line after enlarging or reducing a pattern, so the new line continues the original curve.

Can I buy a quantity for a fashion school?

Yes. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: call 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
