Product description
Metal Pattern-Making L-Square 15×30 cm
A metal L-shaped square with a 30 cm long arm and a 15 cm short arm that meet at a 90-degree angle. The markings are in millimeters, with numbers every 10 mm and red numbers every 100 mm. The small size is convenient for work at a home table and for fine details.
An L-square is the tool that builds the framework of a pattern: the center line, waist line, bust line and hip line, all at right angles to one another. In sewing it is also used to square the fabric edge to the selvage before cutting, and to check that the corners of pockets, collars and rectangular pieces are true.
Common Uses
Drawing the framework of a basic pattern: perpendicular lines at a right angle.
Squaring the fabric edge to the selvage before cutting.
Marking the grainline on the pattern.
Checking the corners of pockets, collars and flaps.
Measuring and drawing long straight lines.
Who It's For
Pattern makers, fashion design students, seamstresses who draft patterns, and fashion schools. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
Professional Tips
Check the angle before you work: place the square on a sheet of paper, draw along it, flip it over and draw again. If the two lines coincide, the angle is true.
Press the long arm against the main line of the pattern, and draw the perpendicular line along the short arm.
You can also use the square as a small weight that holds the pattern paper in place.
Common Mistakes
Drawing a right angle by eye. A small deviation at the corner becomes a deviation of centimeters at the end of the line.
Throwing the square or dropping it on the floor. A knock on the corner can open the angle.
Cutting along the square with a knife without a cutting mat.
How This Ruler Is Different
This is the smallest of the L-squares on the site: 15×30 cm. The 25×50 cm pattern-making L-square suits full basic patterns, and the 40.5×61 cm L-square suits long lines and wide fabric. Choose the small one for details and a small table.
All L-squares are in L-Squares. For drawing curves see Curve Rulers, and for cutting fabric with a rotary cutter see Cutting and Quilting Rulers.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of the ruler?
A long arm of 30 cm (300 mm) and a short arm of 15 cm (150 mm).
What is it made of?
Made of metal with a silver finish.
Why choose a small L-square?
It is handy for details: pockets, collars, tabs and corners. For full patterns, a large L-square is more convenient.
How is the ruler marked?
In millimeters, with a number every 10 mm and a red number every 100 mm.
What is the difference between this and the 25×50 L-square?
It is half the size on each arm. The small one is for details and a home table, and the large one is for full basic patterns.
Why do you need an L-square when making patterns?
To draw perpendicular lines: center front line against the waist line, bust line and hip line. A basic pattern is built on a frame of straight lines at a 90-degree angle.
How do you square a fabric edge with an L-square?
Place one arm along the fabric edge (the selvage) and draw along the other arm. The resulting line is perpendicular to the edge, and you cut along it.
Can you iron near a metal ruler?
Yes, metal does not warp from heat. Still, do not leave the ruler on the fabric while ironing, because it heats up.
How do you keep an L-square accurate?
Store it hanging or flat and do not drop it. A knock on the corner can throw the angle off.
Can I buy a quantity for a school or studio?
Yes. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
