Coil and coil housing: two parts that work together
Every sewing machine that sews a straight stitch has two threads: the top thread, which comes from the roll through the needle, and the bottom thread, which is twisted on the coil. In many machines, the coil goes into a coil housing (also called a coil box or bobbin case), which holds it in place and controls the tension of the bottom thread with a spring and a small screw. When the coil or coil housing does not fit into the machine, the tension is disrupted, and loops appear on the underside of the fabric, knots, and thread breaking.
Metal coil or plastic coil
- Metal coil: Heavy and stable, common in household machinery with removable coil housing on the front and industrial machinery.
- Transparent plastic coil: Lightweight, and you can see through it how much wire is left. It is common in many home machines, especially in machines where the coil is placed on top.
The important rule: use the same material and the same type of coil that came with the machine. Reels that look similar can differ by a few tenths of a millimeter in height or shape of the sides, which is enough to damage the seam.
How to choose a coil or coil house
- Check the type of coil or part number in the machine's instruction book.
- Compare to the existing coil: diameter, height, material, holes in the sides, and groove for the wire.
- A distinction is made between a home machine and an industrial machine. An industrial machine coil housing is not suitable for a home machine, and vice versa.
- Undecided? Take a picture of the existing coil or coil house and send it to us on WhatsApp, and we will help identify it.
Pro Tips
- Hold a few pre-wrapped coils in the colors that work the most, so you don't stop in the middle of work.
- Twist the coil at an even speed, so that the thread spreads evenly and does not swell on one side.
- Clean lint from the coil housing and the area of the snatch with each reel change, and lubricate according to the machine's instructions. Additional accessories for sewing machines are on site.
Common mistakes
- Mixing coil types: A coil that comes in but doesn't fit exactly causes voltage problems that are difficult to locate.
- Crooked or scratched coil: A coil that has fallen and damaged or has a scratch on it may cause skipping stitches. Replace it.
- Voltage change in the coil housing for no reason: first check the thread, cleaning and needle, and only then turn the tension screw, a quarter of a turn at a time.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a coil and a coil house?
The coil is the small cylinder on which the bottom wire is wrapped. The coil housing is the metal case that the coil goes into, and it controls the tension of the bottom wire with a spring and screw.
How do you know which coil is suitable for my sewing machine?
Check the type of coil or part number in the instruction book, and compare it to the existing coil: diameter, height, material, holes in the sides and the shape of the walls. You can also send us a picture of the existing coil on WhatsApp.
Is it possible to use a metal coil instead of a plastic coil?
Only if the machine manufacturer approves it. A machine designed for a plastic coil works best with a plastic coil, and vice versa. A coil made of another material can change the voltage and cause noise or loops.
Is an industrial machine coil suitable for a home machine?
Usually not. Spools and spool housings of industrial machines are built in different dimensions, so choose according to the type of machine and the original spool.
Why do loops form on the underside of the fabric?
In most cases, the cause is incorrect threading of the upper thread or a bobbin that is not suitable for the machine. Check the threading, type of bobbin, and cleanliness of the bobbin case before changing the tension.
How do you adjust the tension in the coil housing?
Turn the small screw on the bobbin case spring, a quarter turn at a time. Clockwise the tension increases, and counterclockwise it decreases. Do this only after checking the thread, needle, and cleanliness.
How often should the coil area be cleaned?
It is recommended to clean lint from the spool housing and the take-up area with each spool change, and during continuous work, even in the middle of the day. Lint that accumulates disrupts the tension and movement of the spool.
When do you replace a coil housing?
When it has a scratch, crack, or a bent spring, or when the tension cannot be adjusted even after cleaning. A small scratch where the thread passes through is enough to cause the threads to break.
Can I buy several coils together?
Yes. It is recommended to keep a few pre-wound spools in common colors, so you can work without stopping. For large quantities for a studio or factory, contact us for details.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes. We also sell reels and reel seats wholesale to stores, studios and workshops. For details, call 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
