Sewing machine accessories: more capability from the same machine
Most sewing machines come with a basic presser foot and a few accessories, but they can do much more. The right foot sews an invisible zipper, a narrow hem or even gathers effortlessly. The right bobbin prevents tension problems, and regular maintenance keeps the machine quiet and precise for years. Accessories are part of our sewing supplies category, alongside sewing accessories for work at the table.
Presser feet for sewing machines
How to know which foot fits
Before choosing a foot, you need to know how it attaches to the machine:
Low shank: most home machines. The distance from the bottom of the foot to the center of the screw hole is about 1.3 cm.
High shank: some heavy-duty machines, including industrial machines. The distance is about 2.5 cm.
Snap-on feet: feet that lock onto a fixed adapter on the machine. They change with a click, no screw needed.
Brand-specific systems: some brands, such as Bernina, have their own attachment system, and a standard foot won't fit without an adapter.
The safe way is to check your machine's manual, or contact us with the model name.
Types of presser feet
Zipper foot: narrow, and sews close to the zipper teeth on either side.
Invisible zipper foot: grooves underneath open up the teeth, and the stitching goes in very close to them, so the zipper disappears into the seam.
Walking foot: moves the top layer together with the bottom layer, so the layers don't shift against each other. For quilting, thick layers, leather, velvet and matching stripes and plaids.
Teflon foot: a non-stick surface for leather, faux leather, vinyl and coated fabrics that stick under a regular foot.
Narrow hem foot: double-folds the edge and sews a fine hem, for chiffon, silk and scarves.
Blind hem foot: sews a hem that's almost invisible from the outside, for pants, skirts and curtains.
Gathering foot: gathers the fabric as you sew, for even gathers on dresses, skirts and sleeves.
Overcasting foot: keeps the fabric edge flat during a zigzag stitch along the edge, and is used for finishing when you don't have a serger.
Buttonhole foot and button sewing foot: for even buttonholes and sewing on buttons by machine.
Quilting foot and free-motion foot: a foot with a marking at about 0.6 cm for precise seams, and a foot for free-motion sewing and embroidery.
Bobbins and bobbin cases
A bobbin looks like a simple part, but a bobbin that doesn't fit your machine exactly causes uneven stitches, thread tangling under the fabric and tension problems that are hard to track down.
Size and type: bobbins come in different sizes and heights, even if the difference is barely visible. Choose by the type listed in your machine's manual, or compare with the original bobbin.
Plastic or metal: machines with a top-loading (drop-in) bobbin usually use a clear plastic bobbin. Machines with a front-loading bobbin case usually use a metal bobbin. Don't swap between them.
Bobbin case: on front-loading and industrial machines, the bobbin case sets the bottom thread tension. Replace a damaged or worn case with one that matches your model.
Spare bobbins: it's worth keeping several full bobbins in different colors so you don't have to unwind a bobbin in the middle of a project.
More accessories
Machine oil: clear oil made specifically for sewing machines. Oil only at the points marked in your machine's manual. Some newer home machines don't need oiling at home.
Cleaning brush: for removing lint and thread scraps from the bobbin area and the feed dogs.
Thread stand: lets you use large thread cones on a home machine and sew for a long time without changing the top spool.
Seam guide: a small ruler, sometimes magnetic, that keeps the fabric at a fixed distance from the needle for an even seam allowance.
Needle threader, screwdriver and needles: small tools worth keeping next to the machine. The right needle for the fabric matters just as much as the foot.
Routine sewing machine maintenance
Clean after every project: remove the bobbin and brush the lint out of the bobbin area and the feed dogs.
A new needle for every project: a worn needle causes skipped stitches and broken thread.
Oil by the manual: one drop at each marked point, then sew on a scrap of fabric to absorb any excess.
Cover: cover the machine when you're not working to protect it from dust.
Professional servicing: every so often, especially for machines that work every day, it's worth having the machine serviced at a repair shop.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which presser foot suits my sewing machine?
Check the shank type. In most home machines the shank is low: the distance from the bottom of the foot to the center of the screw hole is about 1.3 cm. In machines with a high shank the distance is about 2.5 cm. Some brands, such as Bernina, have their own attachment system. The safe way is to check the machine manual, or send us the model name through Contact.
What is a walking foot and when do I need it?
A walking foot moves the top layer of fabric together with the bottom layer, so the layers do not shift against each other while sewing. It is useful in quilting, thick layers, leather and faux leather, velvet and slippery fabrics, and when you need to match stripes and plaids between two pieces.
Which bobbin suits my sewing machine?
Bobbins come in different sizes, heights and materials, even when the difference is barely visible. Choose according to the type listed in the machine manual, or compare to the original bobbin. In machines with a top-loading bobbin, a plastic bobbin is usually used, and in machines with a front-loading bobbin case, a metal bobbin. An unsuitable bobbin causes tension problems and tangled thread.
Which presser feet should every studio have?
A basic kit includes a zipper foot, an invisible zipper foot, a blind hem foot, a buttonhole foot and a walking foot. Anyone working with leather or coated fabrics adds a Teflon foot, and anyone sewing delicate fabrics adds a narrow hem foot. For finishing and pressing the seams there are also pressing hams.
How often should a sewing machine be cleaned and oiled?
Clean lint from the bobbin area and the feed dogs after every project, and with daily use also every few days. Oil only at the points marked in the machine manual, with oil made for sewing machines, and then sew on a scrap of fabric to absorb excess. Some new home machines do not need home oiling. A machine that works every day should be taken for professional servicing from time to time.
What is a zipper foot?
A narrow presser foot that lets you sew very close to the zipper teeth. It is used for sewing zippers and for sewing piping.
What is a hemmer foot?
A foot that folds the fabric edge twice and sews a narrow, clean hem, for example in scarves, blouses and dresses made of light fabric.
How do I know which type of attachment the presser foot has?
Check whether the machine has a low or high shank, and whether the feet snap on or are screwed on. The information appears in the machine manual.
When do I need to replace a bobbin?
When the bobbin is cracked, scratched or bent. A damaged bobbin causes uneven thread tension and skipped stitches.
Which oil suits a sewing machine?
Only clear oil intended for sewing machines. Other oils may leave stains on the fabric and gum up the parts.
